Common to the expressions of Erlend O. Nødtvedt and the Erlend Apneseth Trio is a playful and fearless approach to tradition. While the trio incorporates elements from folk music, such as archival recordings of "stev" (traditional Norwegian song forms) and "lokkar" (cattle calls), the author also actively engages with tradition through quotes, pastiches, tributes, and rewritings.

This simultaneously reverent and playful dialogue with earlier works and expressions is rarely more evident than in the collaborative project based on Olav H. Hauge's poetry.

In the late 1980s, Hauge himself recorded 99 of his best poems in a studio. This recording forms the framework for a poetry concert where a new generation enters into a dialogue with Hauge's own recitations, setting them to music, responding to them, improvising over them, but also manipulating them. For example, the beloved poem "Det er den draumen" is presented in a nine-minute extended version, while other poems are sampled and looped in a way that highlights Hauge's unique rhythm and prosody. The poetry concert can serve both as an introduction to and a re-contextualization of Hauge's poetry, while also showing how one can actively engage with cultural heritage and make it one's own.

About Erlend Apneseth Trio: The group has, in recent years, established itself as one of the most innovative and creative ensembles in the country. They have a distinctive musical expression that combines traditional music, jazz, and contemporary music. All three of their releases have been nominated for the Spellemann Award, and they received the award for "Salika, Molika" in 2019. This album was also nominated for the prestigious Nordic Music Prize as one of the year's best Scandinavian albums.

Erlend O. Nødtvedt was in 2015 named one of Norway's 10 most important authors under 35 by Morgenbladet, and his poetry collection "Bergens Beskrivelse" was included in NRK's major ranking of the most important book releases of the past decade. He has published four poetry collections and two novels, including the critically acclaimed "Vestlandet", and has received several awards for his writing, including the Bjørnson Scholarship and Premio Ostana.
