Zum Hauptinhalt

Behind the glossaries and the strict rules of grammar lies a dramatic life choice. For Aasen, language work is not just about inflections and pronouns - but about giving up love for a greater goal.

What is the value of finding a new word for "I love you" if no one says it to you? What's the point of finding a new word for love, if you have no one to give love to?

As a young twenty-year-old Ivar Aasen fell in love and got engaged, but he was advised to let go of love in order to devote himself to language work. That choice would shape the rest of his life. He still lives alone in a tired flat in Christiania - rich in money, but poor in love.

In the musical, Aasen's inner struggle and personal loss come alive for the audience. The music is inspired by the great Great American Songbook tradition and offers both powerful songs and close, vulnerable scenes where Aasen's inner struggle comes to light. With a dynamic that alternates between song, dance and strong emotions, the audience is drawn into both the large scenes full of energy and the personal encounters where longing, love and sacrifice come close.

In an age where "take care of yourself first" is the mantra, this musical challenges modern thinking. What is actually more important - to realize oneself or to sacrifice something for others? With humor and tragedy woven together, the foresight explores how Aasen won the kingdom, but paid with his own money.

Welcome to a musical about betting everything, winning, but missing the most important thing.
