On Hakallestranda in Vanylven, out by the open sea south of Ålesund, you’ll find the Hakalletrappa. The stone staircase is being built by Sherpas from Nepal, and you can already walk the first 600 steps to the initial viewpoint. The staircase will continue to be extended, with the goal of reaching 2,000 steps all the way to the top.
To the top of Kragsethornet
The staircase starts at Klovningen and will lead all the way to the top of Kragsethornet, 456 meters above sea level. Along the way, there will be benches where you can rest. Once finished, the staircase will stretch approximately 1 km.
View of the open sea
The view from Hakalletrappa is spectacular, with the mighty ocean stretching out before you. To the south, you can see the Stad Peninsula with Vestkapp at the top. You can also view the coastal islands between Runde and Stadt.
Buy your own step
Imagine “owning” one of the incredible steps in this spectacular Sherpa staircase! This is actually possible, and by purchasing a step, you help finance the completion of the staircase. There is even a dedicated "step shop" where you can buy a step and receive a certificate proving your ownership of a part of the staircase.
How to get there
From Ålesund, it takes about 2.5 hours to drive to Hakallestranda. You’ll take two ferries: first from Sulesund to Hareid, and then from Larsnes to Åram or Årvika-Koparnes. Check the ferry schedules at www.frammr.no. If you are traveling from the east via Stryn, there are no ferries. Drive towards Nordfjordeid and Måløy, then take road fv 61 towards Fiskå, and continue out to the open sea at Hakallestranda. Parking is available near the staircase or along the side road.
Accommodation and activities
Nearby, you’ll find beautiful apartments and seahouses at Hakallevær. Tunheimsfjøra Lodge is also just a short drive away. On Hakallestranda, you can also visit the well-known farm Hakallegarden, where both small and large animals roam freely in the yard.
