Sogndal is the regional centre in Sogn with roughly 8000 inhabitants. The two thousand students add to the youthful character of the town.
In the center of Sogndal, which is also called Fjøra, you will find small idyllic cafes that serve delicious local food. Near the center you can also take a trip on Fjordstien, where you can stroll at your own tempo with beautiful views of the Sogndalsfjord.
When in 1823 Bishop J. Neumann travelled through Sogn, he gave the following report on his stay in Sogndal:
"What a wonderful village Sogndal is! We studied the views from different points, but they are everywhere gentle and picturesque, creating a superb contrast to the snow-capped mountain on the far side of the fjord. The river, which runs through the valley, with its beautiful waterfalls and small groups of islands, gives the picture a wonderful effect. The waterfront looks like a market town with rows of houses."
