Erik Bjerck-Hagen's New Book on Alexander Kielland's Novels
Erik Bjerck-Hagen’s new book primarily focuses on Kielland’s nine novels.
The main questions posed are: What enthusiasm, reflection, and emotion do these novels evoke today? What in them feels alive and relevant? What aspects are of historical interest, or rely on habitual sympathy with ideas that once seemed challenging or provocatively controversial? Can Kielland's novels still function effectively as political novels?
Questions like these should periodically be asked of all authors, as very little can be assumed about literature's ability to endure from decade to decade, let alone across centuries.
