Christian Houge, an Oslo-based photographer, has garnered significant attention for his work both internationally and within Norway. The exhibition "Anthropo-cen" opens at the Sølvberget Gallery on the opening day of the Kapittel Festival, Wednesday, 18 September. To mark the occasion, we invite you to a free artist talk with Christian Houge and art historian Tone Lyngstad Nyaas on Thursday, 19 September at 13:00.
Through his commitment to climate and environmental issues, Christian Houge has established himself as an influential voice in both the Norwegian and international art scenes. His photographic series and film works provide a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between nature, culture, and technology. His works often capture the irreversible changes brought about by climate change, serving as a powerful reminder of the crucial balance between humanity and nature.
The exhibition title, "Anthropo-cen," can be translated as "the age of humans," alluding to the significant and transformative impact of human civilisation on the Earth.
Anthropo-cen features a selection of works from three series: Arctic Technology and The Global Seed Vault, Residence of Impermanence, and Death of a Mountain.
About Christian Houge Christian Houge is an Oslo-based photographer who has received more international recognition for his work than within Norway. Throughout his artistic career, he has focused on environmental themes during a time when the Earth has undergone dramatic changes. Through his engagement with climate and environmental issues, Christian Houge has become an essential figure in both national and international art fields.
In Arctic Technology and The Global Seed Vault, panoramic images of Spitsbergen's Research Parks on Svalbard and the Global Seed Vault are showcased. The seed bank contains seeds from most countries and aims to protect plant biodiversity from warming, natural disasters, and war. Houge has received several photographic awards and nominations for his environmentally focused art. He has been awarded grants by the Norwegian Artist Grant and the Arts Council. In recent years, he has been nominated multiple times for the prestigious photography prize in sustainability, Prix Pictet. He has held numerous solo exhibitions nationally and internationally, and his works are part of important private and public collections both at home and abroad.
