Money and economics are central themes in much of 19th-century literature, both internationally and in Norwegian literature. This is perhaps most evident in Kielland's works, where money, trade, investments, and speculation are recurring motifs in several of his books. Here, old money meets new money, established trading houses meet the self-made man.

In this lecture, Lars August Fodstad, professor of Nordic literature and head of the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU, places Kielland's authorship in an economic-historical context that also points towards our own time. What changes in mentality and interpersonal relationships can we trace in Kielland's works, and how are these related to the economic conditions he portrays?
