Chilean-born Melissa Aldana has established herself in the top echelons of jazz. She comes from a jazz family and learnt to play the saxophone by imitating Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins. She still stays close to tradition, but literally breathes fresh air into the jazz scene. Key words are exquisite precision, playfulness and a big tone.
The 35-year-old Grammy-nominated tenor saxophonist received rave reviews for '12 Stars', her debut on Blue Note Records, where she has collaborated closely with Norwegian star guitarist Lage Lund, both based in New York.
On 5 April, Melissa Aldana released her new album 'Echoes Of The Inner Prophet' and on 17 October she will finally be ready for Stavanger for the first time. Aldana herself refers to a lot of dedicated practice to achieve her personal expression and aesthetic. To quote Blue Note boss Don Was: 'Man, just her tone - that's what really got me. ..'
Often fluid, sensitive and with intuitive interplay at the centre, you can expect a great evening at Stavanger's intimate epicentre for jazz; Spor 5.
