On this dark October evening, we encounter two ensembles that uniquely blend acoustic and electronic instruments. The French/Norwegian project Plan Affine uses synthetic, rhythmic sequences as the basis for percussion compositions, while the local Death Songs project takes the opposite approach, using archival recordings as the starting point for an electronic expression.

Garin/Gross/Sørlien Holen/Warland - Plan Affine Plan Affine is a new work by Stéphane Garin and Jean-Philippe Gross in collaboration with Ane Marthe Sørlien Holen and Thore Warland. Their first duo work led to Dénombrement, a piece for percussion and electronic sounds. With an expanded ensemble, Garin and Gross renew the sound material and aesthetics developed in Dénombrement. The composition is based on rhythmic sequences generated by a synthesizer. These electronic sequences were recorded, notated, and arranged for percussion. This process allowed them to contrast the organic nature of acoustic instruments with the rhythmic mechanics of the synthesizer.

Stine Janvin/Morten Joh - Death Songs In the Death Songs project, Stine Janvin and Morten Joh draw on the Ryfylke tradition of death songs and archival recordings of music with death as a theme. Incorporating elements from pop and electronic music, they create a soundscape where modern technology meets musical language and texts from earlier centuries. The music is distinctly microtonal and sometimes heavily abstracted. The performance evokes associations with a well-known ritual that has dramatically changed from the time when the singers on the archival recordings were growing up.
