The world's smallest heroine!
The musical Matilda premiered in 2010 at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford upon Aven, and has since been seen by more than 10 million people worldwide. Now it's finally coming to Stavanger and Rogaland Theatre. We have picked from the top of the cast list and will have a lush ensemble consisting of both adult actors and members of the Children's and Youth Theatre when Matilda is brought to life this spring.
Matilda is about a small, intelligent girl - with supernatural abilities - who is unfortunately born into a terrible family. She belongs to one of the weakest groups in the world: children. The ones who have no say and are bound by the decisions of adults and at the mercy of the norms set by adults. This certainly also applies to Matilda, who is doubly vulnerable.
The small, brave and bookish Matilda is the child of her parents, who are too self-absorbed and corny to recognise her qualities and fantastic characteristics. Her mother didn't want to acknowledge that she was pregnant at first and was furious when she missed a dance competition because of the birth. And her father was furious when he learnt that he had a daughter and not a son! Something he still resents to this day!
Matilda therefore realises early on that she will never experience a hint of love from either her semi-criminal car salesman father or her beauty-seeking mother. So Matilda disappears into the imaginative world of books and spends her time in the library in the company of the slightly absent-minded librarian Miss Phelps. Phelps.
You'd think it couldn't get any worse, but then Matilda starts school. Here, the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull, an old Olympian, reigns supreme. Trunchbull, an old Olympic sledgehammer thrower, who often uses a cage to punish the students. But Matilda is not a girl who puts up with injustice and together with her new schoolmates she decides to rebel.
