On the night of 7 August 1896, the sailing ship Seladon from Stavanger sank in the Pacific Ocean. The crew spent 30 days adrift at sea in lifeboats. Finally, they reached a small atoll in the Polynesian country of Tuvalu, where they lived for almost a year before being rescued. On Niulakita you can still find the grave of the Norwegian sailor who died on the island.

On 17 July 1897, 10 months and 10 days after arriving on the island and more than a year after leaving Australia, they saw something on the horizon again. 5 men hoisted themselves into the boat, a canoe that the natives had made from a tree trunk they had hollowed out. It was the steamship 'Clyde' that came, it was an inspection ship from Fiji.

One of those shipwrecked was Solamannen Abraham Halvorsen Tjelta. A dramatic story that can be repeated many times. Before the lecture starts, we will have the launch of Sola Historielag's yearbook 2024. It can be purchased for kr. 300,-

Free admission.

Duration: 1 hour and 15 min. Organiser: Sola Historielag.
