An Authentic and Warm Drama from One of Norway's Most Exciting Filmmakers

Bobby is a 12-year-old boy, the son of a whimsical, dishevelled, and alcoholic jazz musician (Roy Bjørnstad) struggling to make ends meet during the German occupation of Norway. The single father retreats with his son into increasingly elaborate dreams and tall tales. In the background, the sparse everyday life of wartime continues, while Bobby receives help from a German soldier, perhaps offering him a way out of melancholy, family crisis, and daily hardship.

Arnljot Berg's understated Bobby’s War was selected for the main competition at the Berlin Festival in 1974. Berg’s depiction of war is clearly inspired by Italian neorealism. Bitter, yet beautiful and warm, the film provides vivid impressions with an authentic and convincing tone.
