Gilda is regarded as one of the great erotic classics from Hollywood's Golden Age, solely due to Rita Hayworth's smoulderingly sensual and timelessly captivating portrayal of the title character. Hayworth’s Gilda, posing in a figure-hugging dress, with her flowing red hair cascading down her shoulders and a smoking cigarette in hand, is a visual icon as recognisable as Bogart in Casablanca or Marlene Dietrich in The Blue Angel.
Set in Buenos Aires, Gilda revolves around the bitter love triangle between Gilda, her new husband, and a former lover—an explosive triangle brewed from passion, betrayal, and hatred. The film’s dialogue is famous, peppered with sharp and brutally cynical lines. Most notable is the extremely seductive scene where Gilda “strips” (she only removes a glove…) to the tune of “Put the Blame on Mame.”
