To get to the island of Karmøy, you have to cross the Karmsund bridge, which straddles the strait that gave Norway its name: Norðrvegr – Nordvegen – the road north.
The trip continues to the echo of history, at Norway’s oldest royal seat at Avaldsnes. Here you can get to know the Vikings: who were they, what was important to them, and what was an ordinary day like during the Viking Age?Avaldsnes is home to the Nordvegen History Centre, the Viking Farm and St. Olav’s Church. A short drive from Avaldsnes is the Visnes Mining museum, which is also worth a visit.
The trip then continues to Åkrasanden, one of Karmøy’s (and perhaps Norway’s) most beautiful beaches. Not only is it a great place for a dip in the sea, Åkrasanden is also a favourite destination for walks as well as a playground for kite enthusiasts. And since you’re in Åkra, don’t miss the chance to try the fabled Kanuttapølsa sausage. You can buy it at the hot dog stand at Esebjør 11.
After a breath of fresh air, the trip continues south to Sandhåland, where the Panoramahyttene cabins are mirrored in the sea. With their large windows leaning towards the sea, the view is just as magical on sunny days as on stormy days. This is the first accommodation on the trip, and you’re guaranteed an unforgettable experience!
