The museum first opened in 1990 and is a volunteer-operated museum. Some 1200 members from 14 organizations provide the resources needed to operate the museum and present the attractions and exhibits you can experience during your visit.

The Bergen Technical Museum is located in the old tram shed in Bergen. Built in 1913, it remained in the service for public transportation until tram operation in Bergen ceased in 1965. The city public works department used the facility until the Technical Museum moved in and occupied the building in 1990. At that time, it was intended that the complex should be razed to give way to modern apartment buildings. Our effort stopped the demolition of this cathedral of transportation, and by 1994 the property was listed as a national landmark.

Over three decades, major parts of the main tram shed has slowly been restored, and created exhibits that offers visitors a journey through the local history of transportation and communication. The restoration continues and the intent is to open new areas to the public and offer more attractions.

Among our attractions is a fully operational ship steam engine, the oldest operating printing press in Norway and our own 1,5 km historic tram line first operated from 1911. Since 2022 the museum has offered scheduled tram services between the museum and the city center.
