The monastery was established in 1163 by Erling Skakke. Visitors today will find monastery ruins from the 14th century, a large farmhouse from 1841, and gardens. Guided tours, exhibitions, lectures, and concerts. The area is beautifully located at the inlet of the Hardangerfjord and is one of several premises managed by the Sunnhordland museum. Halsnøy monastery can be rented for meetings and functions. Open on request outside the summer season.
