Hidra has been inhabited for thousands of years. Vikings used to live there. In the 19th century several gold items and runes were found on the island.

Due to economic challenges, thousands of Norwegians emigrated to the USA, during the 19th century. Consequently, the number of inhabitants at Hidra fell drastically. Their hopes for a better future for themselves and their families, made them move. A lot of the Norwegians who immigrated to the USA, sent money back home to help their families.

Prior to the German invasion, during World War II, Norwegian marines were stationed at Hidra. As Norway capitulated to the invaders, there were no battles there and the marines left the island. The Germans built the naval fort Hitterøy and after a while, German soldiers were stationed at the fort at Hågåsen. They had their own command centre, with a command central, accommodation for both crew and officers, kitchen, storage for their ammunition, military hospital, underground passages, and canons etc. The Germans shot at British planes from the fort. But the area was not bombed.

For selfie hunters, make sure you visit the viewing point Vidsyn at Hågåsen, the colourful Små Hytter (small cabins), the design cabin, Utsyn, or the ruins at Hågåsen! The coastal gem, Hidra, is a must if you visit the area!
