A mountain hike to Hamnanova, at approximately 750 metres above sea level, offers a fantastic nature experience for the whole family. The trail takes you through varied terrain with a steady ascent of around 350 metres, and the reward at the top is a breathtaking view of Jølstravatnet, Kjøsnesfjorden, and the majestic surrounding mountains.

Where is Hamnanova?

Hamnanova is beautifully located on the southern side of Jølstravatnet, right by the E39, and is easily accessible by both car and public transport.

How to get to Hamnanova?

By car

From Skei, follow Riksveg 5 towards Lærdal for about 2.5 kilometres. Turn right at the junction onto Nikolai Astrups veg and cross the bridge between Jølstravatnet and Kjøsnesfjorden. After about 1 kilometre, turn left towards Dvergsdaldalen. Parking is available at the gravel pit/sand quarry in Dvergsdaldalen.

By public transport

Scheduled buses stop at Skei or at the bus stop near the junction to Nikolai Astrups veg. From the bus stop, follow the main road up to Dvergsdaldalen and continue towards Hamnanova. Check schedules at skyss.no.

Best season for hiking to Hamnanova

During winter, Hamnanova is covered in snow, so it is recommended to hike between May and October unless you are well-equipped for winter hiking. Snow and ice conditions can vary, so always check the weather forecast and local conditions before setting out.

Trail description to Hamnanova

The hike starts at the gravel pit and follows a stone-paved trail through the spruce forest to a junction. From there, take the trail along the west-facing side all the way up to Hamnanova. The ascent is steady throughout, but once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of Kleivafjellet, Jølstravatnet, and Kjøsnesfjorden. At the summit, there is an open hut with an outdoor toilet – a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery before heading back down.

Hiking terrain

Although the ascent is steep, the hike is manageable for those used to trekking. The round trip takes about 1.5 hours for an adult in normal physical condition, but it is important to adjust your pace based on your own abilities. Much of the trail is stone-paved, allowing for relatively dry hiking even in marshy areas.
