Tour description
Hjelmen is located in the outfield of the vicarage and is a small natural gem. The path up to the top runs through pastures and juniper hills. A short detour into the oak forest on the east-facing slope towards Steinslandsvatnet is an experience. Here you'll find a ‘magic forest’ of large oak trees and the area is internationally recognised for its lichen deposits. The summit is 206 metres above sea level. However, the view is best around the edge due to the rich vegetation that closes it off. Here you get an orchestral view of the whole of Hjelmelandsvågen, the fjord and the islands beyond. At the viewpoint you'll find a statue ‘Northern Winds’ in local Randøy stone, by Santos Carvalho Escultor, Portugal. This is popularly known as the Lady of the Helmet. There are also tables and benches at the picnic area at the top.
Trail: Before you get to the trail itself, take the road past the prayer centre and through the housing estate to the first information board. There is an asphalted hill up to the pasture. 1 hour, 2 km. Marked. Easy hike for the whole family.
