Lysevegen is one of Norway's most spectacular mountain roads. Winding from Lysebotn by the Lysefjord, over impressive mountain peaks through lunar-like terrain, it ends in the charming Sirdal valley. With its 27 hairpin bends and an elevation difference of over 900 meters, the road offers an unforgettable driving experience. Since the opening of the Suleskard Road in 1990, the area has become more accessible, making Lysevegen a must-visit for Norwegian and international travellers.
Construction of Lysevegen road
Construction of Lysevegen began in the early 1980s as part of the Tjodan Hydroelectric Project. The biggest challenge was passing through the demanding area known as "Råså" at the base of the mountain. The solution was a unique corkscrew tunnel winding under Råså, after which the road emerges onto the mountain ledge "Okslå." From here, the spectacular hairpin bends offer fantastic views of Lysedalen, Lysebotn, and Lysefjord.
Øygardstøl viewpoint and starting point for the Kjerag hike
At the top of the bends lies Øygardstøl, a popular viewpoint and starting point for hikes to Kjeragbolten and Nesatindane. After Øygardstøl, the road continues through lunar-like landscapes for 25 kilometres before descending into Sirdal. From here, you can drive over Suleskard to Setesdal, through Sirdal to Egersund, or via Hunnedalen towards Byrkjedal, Jæren, and Stavanger.
Practical Information about the Lysevegen road
Lysevegen is a seasonal road, usually closing in November when the snow arrives and reopening at the end of May after clearing. When the road opens in spring, snow walls can be several meters high, adding to the special experience. The road is narrow and winding, so drive carefully and watch for oncoming traffic. There are several rest areas along the route where you can enjoy the stunning scenery.
From Lysebotn to Sirdal
The road starts in Lysebotn at the end of Lysefjord and stretches to Sirdal in Vest-Agder. It is part of county road FV500 and easily accessible by car. For a complete experience, consider combining the drive with a ferry trip through Lysefjord.
