Storehesten means "the big horse" in Norwegian. The Big Horse Mountain is a characteristic landmark in the whole Sunnfjord region watching the inner parts of the Dalsfjord, a historic Viking landscape. The mountain rises 1209 meters above sea level.
Good marked trail
The signs Storehesten, from the centre of Bygstad will take you to the parking place, 400 meters above sea level. From here there is a well-marked trail, with red T`s, all the way to the top of the mountain. Normal walking for three hours will take you to the top. A map is available at the Spar shop in Bygstad centum.
From the top, you will have a fantastic view of the Åflot Glacier to the north, the Jostedal Glacier in the east, Northern Europe´s largest glacier, the mountains surrounding the city of Bergen to the south, and the North Sea to the west.
Sturdy mountain footwear is essential. The trip is 11 km long with a hight difference of 780 m.
