The museum provides a picture of the history of clothing in Romsdal, but will also provide knowledge about the history of the Norwegian clothing industry. In Isfjorden stood "the cradle of clothing" it is said. Clothes were already being produced there as early as the 1860s, which was quite unusual at the time. The market for ready-made clothes was small, and only a few tailor companies in the largest cities had gradually started sewing. Attention was focused on the fishing villages north of the coast. During the large fisheries, there were large numbers of fishermen who could have good money. This became a new market for the trade in ready-made clothes and shoes. Nordlandshandelen, as it was eventually called, laid the foundation for an adventurous development of the clothing industry in the Romsdal villages. It also became very important in a national context. In the 1930s, the factories elsewhere in the country had to shrink.
