Trail description
With spectacular views in every direction, Tysnessåto is a very popular hiking destination for both locals and visitors.
Starting from Myrdal:
From this point, you quickly gain elevation, and it only takes a few minutes before you can see the fjord. The trail is quite steep through Buskaret and Gråuro, but the over 1,000 stone steps built by Nepalese Sherpas have made the hike much easier for most people. Along the way, you’ll find several well-crafted resting spots made of stone.
Toward the summit:
Once you reach Såtefjellet, the terrain levels out slightly, making it an easy and pleasant walk to the top.
The hike is suitable for the whole family, provided you take your time. Remember to wear sturdy hiking shoes with ankle support, dress appropriately for the weather, and bring plenty of water. Packing a picnic makes the hike even more enjoyable.
Seasons
The hike can be done year-round, but winter conditions should be carefully assessed. The hike is not recommended in snow or icy conditions. Read about safety in the mountains here.
Bonus tips
- Visit Myrdal Gård (Farm):
During the summer season, many enjoy stopping by Myrdal Gård after their hike. Here, you can buy wood-fired pizza, homemade ice cream, cheese, and other tempting local products. Be sure to check the opening hours beforehand. - Explore more of Tysnes mountain:
Consider taking a detour to the idyllic summer pasture Ådnastegen or even Hovlandsnuten if you’re feeling energetic. - Alternative routes:
The saying "all roads lead to Rome" certainly applies to Tysnessåto. If you prefer a longer, less steep hike without steps, you can start from Dalen, Skaret, or Solheimsdalen.
