Pedal your way to the top: Explore Uburen by bike

Uburen is the characteristic round mountain peak at Forsand at the entrance to the Lysefjord.

Adrenalin leads the way to the top

You can start the tour from Gøysa Gard in Forsand where they have electric bike hire. From here, it takes around 20 minutes to cycle to the car park (Uburen parking) for the tour's starting point to the trip to Uburen. From here you cycle on to the first part of the tour, which takes you around a bend and up a steep construction road built in connection with the power line development across the Høgsfjord. As you approach Uburen, the road becomes more challenging, but the adrenaline kicks in. Eventually, the landscape opens up and the construction road becomes a clear path. Leave your bikes here and hike the last part up to the mountain top. After passing the power lines that span Høgsfjorden, you reach the 440-metre-high summit.

The view takes your breath away - majestic mountains and fjords stretch out below you. Just below you are Forsand, Høgsfjorden and the mouth of Lysefjord. On a clear day, you can see both islands Kvitsøy and Karmøy in the distance. The feeling of having reached your destination after such a challenge is indescribable. Now you just have to savour it! Sit down, and take a well-deserved break, surrounded by the silence and beauty of nature.

On your way back down, just let gravity do the work. You'll feel the wind in your hair as you hurtle down the slopes!

Getting to Uburen

By bus and bring the bike

If you're travelling by public transport, you can take the bus to Helle and Espedal, see Kolumbus for timetables. You can bring your bike on the bus if there is space available. Same price and conditions as a single child ticket on the bus.

By car

If you are driving, follow the road RV13 to the Lysefjord bridge. Drive on over the bridge to the road FV491 and the sign to Helle. Continue until you see a sign for "Natursti" (nature trail). The trail starts and ends here. Parking is available at Rossavikheia just off the FV491.

The mountain with a dark history - the legend of Uburen

According to legend, the mountain Uburen got its name because unwanted or sick children were thrown out of the mountain. These could be illegitimate children or children with defects. The name Uburen means those who were carried out - "utburd". Similar stories can be found elsewhere in Norway, where elderly people who could no longer contribute were abandoned or even sought out to die. The phenomenon known as ættestup or ættedrap is found in both Norwegian and foreign legends. In the film The Ballad of Narayama, a similar tradition from 19th century Japan is depicted, where people over the age of 70 were put on Mount Narayama to die.
