“People's skiing levels vary greatly, which is why having a guide is so valuable. The guide ensures guests have the best experience tailored to their abilities,” says the tour guide Oscar Almgren. He and his team know the mountains intimately – from the classic routes to hidden gems they would love to share with you and your group. “Sometimes people think you need to be an expert to join in. That's definitely not the case,” Oscar adds.

Oscar has run Uteguiden, a company offering a range of experiences between the region’s deep fjords and dramatic peaks, for over ten years. "A guide knows exactly what’s happening and when," he says. Not only do the guides understand the terrain and weather, but they also have a deep appreciation for the region’s culture, local foods, and traditions – ready to share even more than a ski trip.

It is easy to see why this mountain area is called the Sunnmøre Alps. Jagged peaks rise sharply from the sea and fjords, near the charming town of Ålesund – with direct flights to Vigra airport. Here, you will find ample opportunities to ski with a fjord view.

The largest and best-known ski resort is Strandafjellet Skisenter, where you can ski right in the heart of the fjord landscape. In the nearby village of Sykkylven, there are hidden skiing spots in varied terrain to suit skiers of all abilities.

You can also fly directly to Ørsta/Volda, where there are options for summit tours for beginners, thrill-seekers, and seasoned skiers alike. For the daring, the annual extreme sports festival X2 is held here, with a free-riding competition as the highlight. The region also draws enthusiasts to the Sunnmørsalpane Ski Festival, Stranda Ski Festival, and Hjørundfjord Ski Festival.

With a ski centre, accessible summit routes, and the majestic Hjørundfjord, this area is a fantastic base for mountain skiing. You can also experience Ski & Sail on the Hjørundfjord or take on the Hjørundfjord Haute Route for an entire week.

The Alpepass – nine times the skiing

The region is home to multiple alpine centres, perfect for days when you are skiing without a guide. With varied terrain and a climate that often guarantees good snow, a nearby ski centre always offers excellent conditions. The Alpepass ski pass grants access to nine regional ski centres with just one pass.
