Balestrand holds an important cultural position within Norwegian architecture and building history. Here you find many examples of the ‘dragon style’, which is a Norwegian variant of the Swiss style (1890 – 1920). Many of these villas were built by artists or wealthy visitors who found inspiration and recreation in Balestrand towards the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
Most of these buildings can be found along the promenade from the centre along beside the fjord.
Art has been important in Balestrand for many generations and still is today. As you stroll around Balestrand you may come across a sculpture or other outdoor work of art as well finding fine art collections available to the public at some of the hotels. The Balestrand Art Society is very active in ensuring that both residents and visitors can experience a variety of exhibitions through the year. Please contact the Tourist Office for more information.
