The visitor center in Askvoll is located in Stongfjorden. Here, you can learn more about local geology and industrial heritage.
The Episenter in Askvoll is co-located with the Sunnfjord GeoCenter, and its main theme is to communicate the geological and industrial history of the region.
Askvoll lies on the northern side of the Dalsfjord and boasts a rich Viking heritage. In Rivedal, you’ll find a statue of Ingolf Arnarson, who founded the first settlement in Iceland in the year 874.
From the municipal center of Askvoll, you can look directly west to Atløy, a location frequently mentioned in the Norse sagas of Snorre. The municipality is also home to Norway’s westernmost fishing communities – Bulandet and Værlandet – which are still active and popular destinations for island hopping, cycling, and hiking. Here, the famous landmark Alden (481 meters above sea level) rises straight from the sea. Known as “The Norwegian Horse,” Alden is one of the most striking coastal landmarks and a highly popular hiking destination. Another unique landmark is the geological formation known as “Brurastakken,” a mountain that vividly showcases the geological heritage of the region.
With around 3,000 inhabitants, the municipality has a proud industrial history to share, alongside vibrant agriculture and fisheries.
