Bergefjell and Vikastakken stand as the highest mountains near Forsand, forming a stunning ridge that offers an unforgettable hiking experience with panoramic views in every direction. This traverse is ideal for seasoned hikers seeking a rewarding challenge. You can hike from point A to B and enhance your adventure by starting or ending with a bike ride along the picturesque Lysefjord.
The ascent to Bergefjell
The journey begins at the playground across the street from Forsand bedehus. Take a deep breath—the ascent starts immediately and is a steady uphill climb. Over the first 2.5 kilometres, you'll gain approximately 600 meters in elevation. Pace yourself and take time to enjoy the breathtaking views unfolding behind you. As you look back, you'll see Forsand and Oanes nestled against the backdrop of the expansive Høgsfjord. The trail winds through forested areas before you break above the treeline, transitioning to open bedrock. Once at higher elevations, you're rewarded with panoramic vistas that extend to the open ocean.
Continuing to Vikastakken
If the full traverse feels too demanding upon reaching the summit of Bergefjell, you can just retrace your steps back down. However, beyond Bergefjell, the terrain becomes more gentle. The trail meanders past three serene mountain lakes: Svartalivatn, Stemmavatn, and Stølsvatnet. After passing these lakes, you'll face the final ascent to Vikastakken, renowned for its distinctive peak.
Atop Vikastakken, you're greeted with new and expansive views in all directions. To the west, the Lysefjord stretches out with the distant town of Jørpeland visible on clear days. The Høgsfjord unfolds with its scattering of islands and islets, and far on the horizon, you might catch a glimpse of Stavanger. To the east, the characteristic shape of Mount Frafjordhatten captures the eye, along with Mount Neverdalsfjellet and the iconic Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock).
The descent through varied terrain
The descent begins gently but gradually becomes steeper. The trail weaves between trees, rocks, and heather, following the edge of a moraine ridge for a short distance. Around Vikastølen, the terrain levels out, and you'll come across a well-maintained cabin (not available for accommodation) nestled in a forest clearing. This spot marks the start of the steeper portion of your descent. The path then plunges through majestic pine forests, offering fleeting glimpses of the Lysefjord between the trees. The hike concludes at the road between Vika and Dørvika, where you can reflect on an adventure filled with natural beauty and awe-inspiring views.
