How to experience the Trollstigen plateau even when the road is closed
Trollstigfoten – situated at the barrier used for closing the road in winter – can still be reached by foot, bike or car from Åndalsnes. From there, you can look up towards the architectural ramps at the viewpoint, Stigfossen waterfall and the road’s famous bends. On the way to Trollstigfoten, in Isterdalen valley, is Trollstigen Camping and Gjestegård, which not only offers accommodation but also has a café and a souvenir shop.
If you want to walk the Kløvstien path to Trollstigen, Trollstigfoten is one of two starting points for the walking route that runs on the opposite side of the valley. The route offers views directly across to the road's iconic hairpin bends. You can reach the viewpoint on Trollstigen plateau in about 1–3 hours, depending on how far down the valley you start the hike. The hike is medium-hard, so don’t forget to wear good hiking shoes! Guided tours are also available through the Norwegian Mountaineering Centre, Norsk Tindesenter.
Drive or cycle from Valldal - The Adventure Valley up to the viewpoint on the Trollstigen plateau. The route leads you past Gudbrandsjuvet gorge – itself an architectural viewpoint where you can experience steep mountainsides, the river and the gorge at close range.
